A DANCER'S MARKET

Our third year final project was an undergraduate thesis, investigating the themes of ‘performance’ and ‘the city’. This multipurpose community building offers a solution to this issue, employing all aspects of dancing and performance to regenerate a community in a developing area.

The proposal extends over three floors. The ground floor features public spaces; a dance theatre, a cafe and public square: the Marketplace. This square is designed to inspire informal performances and to introduce the community to the art of dancing. As the building rises, so does privacy. The first floor offers standing audience spaces for the marketplace and theatre as well as community based workshop and offices. The second floor is a dance school for professionals that acts as a roof over the public outdoor square.Gradual material translucency was used to create the desired effect of semi-private spaces, allowing for the outdoor visitors to peak and experience what is happening indoor without interfering with the dancers’ privacy.
